In partnership with the Totally and Partially Disabled Veterans of WA (TPDVWA) we held our first (and highly successful) Charity Golf Day on Sunday 18th April, 2021. The weather was fantastic and everyone appeared to have a wonderful day. Special thanks to all of our volunteers on the day, but especially to the driving force behind the whole event - our very own member - Alan Steel!
It was also fabulous to see Presidents Lukarla and Mark start the event with the 'Tee Off'!
The putting competition was very entertaining, with only 8 golfers making it through to the final, at which point only 1 contender actually getting into the circle! I'm not sure if the post event consumption of alcohol contributed to the results.
Winners are Grinners!
So good to see our event partners in amongst the winner too. Thanks to the TPDVWA for their hard work and contribution to making the event such a success!
This colourful little golf ball is waiting for everyone to come back next year! Many thanks to Karen Steel and Jacki Starr for their efforts with making memories with Karen's cameras.
JACK COLLIER - GUEST SPEAKER 19TH APRIL 2021
At the club meeting on 19th April we welcomed Jack Collier who spoke about his 'Polio Journey'. Jack was born in Kenya and at the age of 5 was sent to boarding school in a town called Nakuru, which was 150 miles from his home. He travelled there alone by train, something of a feat for a 5 year old!
At the age of 10 he was sent to another boarding school in Nairobi, a distance of 500 miles from his home, again travelling alone. It was here that Jack contracted polio when he was just 13 years old. He recalled how he spend 9 months in an iron lung just to be able to breathe. Jack also told us that of the 20 boys in his school group, 18 become infected at the same time and some of the children died. The only reason the other 2 were spared is that they were away from the school at the time.
Unfortunately recovering from polio wasn't the end of the story and Jack now suffers from Post Polio Syndrome. Research is being done into this condition, however at the moment more support is needed. Jack currently suffers from muscle wastage, difficulty walking and no stomach muscle strength. His condition will continue to worsen and is directly linked to the polio he suffered as a child.
Jack has given his permission to share some of the information from his presentation to the club.
What is Polio?
Polio is a very contagious virus.
It effects the nervous system, which controls all movements.
Iron Lungs which enabled affected patients to breathe even though their own diaphragm stopped working.
First time out of hospital, nurse took us to the Nairobi National Park for a picnic.
My friend Ian Bumpus in the iron lung, the same as mine.
School Photographic Competition - People's Choice Award Winner
On Saturday 17th April, we recognised the winner of the 'People's Choice' award at Stockland Baldivis Shopping Centre. We were very fortunate that Reece Whitby, MLA for Baldivis, was able to donate present the award to Michelle Roberts for her photo of 'Sunset at the Beach'.
Congratulations Michelle!
Presentations of the other recognitions will take place at schools over the coming weeks.
