MEAL BOOKINGS FOR PEEL MANOR HOUSE - GENTLE REMINDER!
Please make your meal requests and payment direct to Peel Manor House by Sunday evening, prior to the Monday meeting. This will enable Paul to cater for the correct number of guests! Your attention to this is greatly appreciated. The link can be found at:
This week we celebrated the birthdays of our very talented member, Jacki Gahan. She provided us with party hats, lolly bags and some very delicious, low fat (NOT) cupcakes.
Thanks Jacki - we hope you had a wonderful day!
We were also reminded that Robbie Burns was born on 25th January. Murray McKay shared some of his poetry in his best Scottish accent.
Selkirk Grace
Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.
As the meeting concluded Murray shared 'Auld Lang Syne' with us, after a very unsuccessful attempt by members to sing it. Please note that any requests for translation will be directed to Murray!
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne! Chorus
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint stoup!
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
Chorus
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
Sin’ auld lang syne.
Chorus
We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin’ auld lang syne.
Chorus
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie’s a hand o thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie-waught,
For auld lang syne.
Scotland's national poet Robert Burns is recognised the world over for his work focusing on universal themes of love and nature. He has a national day named after him on the 25th January each year. Burns suppers are celebrated on this day with traditional dishes of haggis and whisky and recitals of his best-loved work.
Rotary Foundation (presented by Alan Steel, Foundation Chair)
At our meeting this week Alan provided us with an entertaining presentation, including an update on the 4 star rating from Charity Navigator (see below), and a 'Basics of Foundation' Quiz (which most of us sadly failed dismally).
See if you can answer the quiz questions correctly:
What year was the first contribution made to The Rotary Foundation?
How much was the first contribution to The Rotary Foundation?
How much was the first award to an organisation from The Rotary Foundation?
Which organisation received the first award?
How many areas of focus did The Rotary Foundation have at 30 December, 2020?
Which area of focus will be added on 1 July, 2021?
How much funding is spent on program awards and operations?
Answers will be included in the next bulletin!
Alan has also issued a challenge to all members - complete the learning module in My Rotary titled 'Rotary Foundation Basics. He would love to see your completion certificates at the next meeting.
(If you are unsure how to access the Learning Centre in My Rotary feel free to contact Secretary Bob or Bulletin Editor Kay - we will happily talk you through it!)
For the 13th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
"Your achievement and 4-star rating will enhance your organization’s fundraising and public relations efforts,” says Michael Thatcher, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator. "This exceptional designation sets the Foundation apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."
The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness.
Update from International Chair Leanne Knowler
The results of the first 'Giving Day' for Shelterbox have been announced. Leanne was excited to announce that Rotary District 9465 achieved the highest amount of volunteer-led donations in Australia through our District page, with a total of $4514 contributed. We are 5th out of 17 Districts in the total District donations, which includes the Giving Day website, matched funding, direct donations and club donations.
Overall the event raised $130,000 and over half of this amount - $75,000 was sourced from Rotary. The following message was received from the organisers:
Thank you to everyone that was involved in our inaugural Shelterbox Giving Day. We anticipate that the Rotary District Challenge will be bigger and better this year when we celebrate Human Rights Day on December 10th in 2021.

Update from Community Chair - Mark Chaston
Mark reminded us to keep taking those containers in and getting the funds into our Charity account. So far we have received $111 and would love to see that reach a sizeable amount by 30 June 2021. At the next meeting Mark will have a 'wheelie bin' ready to collect containers from members. Bring them in!
As a club we are also collecting 'ring pulls' and 'bread clips' so keep bringing those as well. Either Mark or Ann will happily take them off your hands!
We are waiting on a commitment from one more local club to complete our support of an Indigenous Scholarship through Australian Rotary Health. Once this is received we can forward our contribution towards this fantastic program.

Davina also shared the following poem by Ilan Shamir.
Dear Friend,
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter
Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!
HANDICAMP AND RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) DINNERS
The RYLA dinner was attended by members Leanne Knowler, Bob Phipps and Kay Phipps. Leanne was attending her first camp as a committee member and found the experience very rewarding. Our President Lukarla was part of a panel involved with sharing their journey and providing mentoring for the participants.
The quality of the young people was amazing and augurs well for our future! It was a highly enjoyable evening interacting with the attendees and hearing their stories.
The Handicamp dinner was also attended by Bob and Kay Phipps. It was a very enjoyable evening meeting with the campers and their buddies. The Handicamp committee did a fantastic job of organising the week long camp and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time. Particular mention should be made of Committee Chair Wendy Cooper for putting her heart and soul into ensuring the event took place.

International Women's Day 2021 - Choose to Challenge
Strike the #ChooseToChallenge pose
Raise your hand assertively and show that you choose to challenge inequity.
Show your solidarity in choosing to challenge and call out aspects that are unhelpful to women.
Will you raise your hand high and pledge to #ChooseToChallenge?
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.
International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.
The theme for IWD 2021 is 'Choose to Challenge';
A challenged world is an alert world.
And from challenge comes change.
So choose to challenge!
Baldivis Rotary will again be holding it's signature event in celebration of IWD. See following for details. When available, speakers details will be added - so watch this space!
